![]() The first SigAlert was on Labor Day weekend in 1955, and some stories on the SigAlert conflate these two events. Too many doctors, nurses and sightseers drove there, making the situation worse. The alert described the derailment of a passenger train near Los Angeles' Union Station and requested any available doctors and nurses to respond to the scene. ![]() One of the first major "Sigmon traffic alerts" was broadcast on January 22, 1956, causing a traffic jam. Depending on the nature of the problem, the engineer could air the police broadcast immediately, interrupting regular programming if necessary. ![]() When a message had been received and recorded from the LAPD, a red light, sometimes accompanied by a buzzer, would alert the radio stations' engineers. Initially, half a dozen stations installed Sigmon receivers that had "Sigalert" stamped on their side. Parker, was interested, though skeptical, warning the inventor, "We're going to name this damn thing Sigalert." More practically, he refused to use it unless the receivers were made available to all Los Angeles radio stations-it could not be a KMPC monopoly. At the time, the device cost about $600 (equivalent to $5,600 in 2018). When the receiver picked up a particular tone, it would record the subsequent bulletin. ![]() Sigmon developed a specialized radio receiver and reel-to-reel tape recorder. Now, he proposed to apply his knowledge of complex radio networks to the situation in Los Angeles. Eisenhower's staff, in charge of non-combat radio communications in the European theater. Sigmon had worked for Golden West's station KMPC 710 in 1941 but found himself in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II, assigned to General Dwight D. Sigmon was executive vice president of Golden West Broadcasters (a company owned by singing cowboy Gene Autry). "Sig" Sigmon began developing a solution. Using the telephone to distribute the information tied up telephone lines and forced officers to repeat the same information again and again. Radio stations reported traffic conditions, but the LAPD refused to call radio stations with this information, so each station would call the LAPD. By the early 1950s, the rapidly growing number of automobiles in Los Angeles had greatly increased the frequency and severity of traffic accidents and jams. SigAlerts originated in 1955 with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). In practice, there is no standard spelling the CHP website uses "SIG Alerts" and "Sigalert" while Caltrans uses "Sig-Alert". The term was added in 1993 to the New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) defines it as any traffic incident that will tie up two or more lanes of a freeway for two or more hours. In practice, the term refers to a notice of such a closure issued by the CHP, and Sigalerts are posted on the CHP website, broadcast on radio and television stations throughout California, and signaled to motorists via electronic message signs on the freeways. The term was originally the name of a pioneering system of automated radio broadcasts regarding traffic conditions, introduced in the 1950s and named after its inventor, Loyd Sigmon.Ī Sigalert is defined by the California Highway Patrol (CHP) as "any unplanned event that causes the closing of one lane of traffic for 30 minutes or more". Sig alert, Sig-alert or Sigalert in California, as well as other parts of the United States, means an incident that significantly disrupts road traffic.

![]() ![]() Starting from the 16th century, Genoese stonecutters-merchants also entered this flourishing trade. Just to cite an example, starting from 1474, first the Maffioli, then the Buffa, supplied the marble for the facade of the Certosa di Pavia, also taking care of the transport of the material which, by ship, after having circumnavigated Italy, reached the construction site of the monastery after having sailed up the Po and the Ticino by boat. Some of them, such as the Maffioli, who rented some quarries north of Carrara, in the Torano area, or, around 1490, Giovanni Pietro Buffa, who bought marble on credit from local quarrymen and then resold it on the Venetian market, were able to create a dense commercial network, exporting the marble even to distant locations. In the Middle Ages, most of the quarries were owned by the Marquis Malaspina who in turn rented them to families of Carrara masters who managed both the extraction and transport of the precious material. This is still attractive as an architectural facing, or for tiles.Ĭarrara marble has been used since the time of Ancient Rome then called the " Luna marble". By the late 20th century this had now run out, and the considerable ongoing production is of stone with a greyish tint, or streaks of black or grey on white. The pure white statuario grade was used for monumental sculpture, as "it has a high tensile strength, can take a high gloss polish and holds very fine detail". More marble has been extracted from the over 650 quarry sites near Carrara than from any other place. It has been quarried since Roman times in the mountains just outside the city of Carrara in the province of Massa and Carrara in the Lunigiana, the northernmost tip of modern-day Tuscany, Italy. Carrara marble, Luna marble to the Romans, is a type of white or blue-grey marble popular for use in sculpture and building decor. Engraving of the interior of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome in Piranesi’s ‘Vedute di Roma’ (1748?-1778?) He became revered particularly for his intense, evocative and romantic views of the buildings and monuments of ancient and modern Rome, with their dramatic contrasts of light and dark tones. ![]() However, his work and ideas were to be of great influence to architects of the neo-classical movement throughout Europe in the eighteenth century and beyond. Piranesi produced a great number of engravings during his lifetime, and it is as an engraver that he is best known today, rather than as an architect. In 1740, he moved to Rome, and trained for a short time as a stage designer with the Italian architect, Filippo Juvarra. Piranesi initially trained as an architect, and later studied etching with Carlo Zucchi in Venice. Engraving of the Basilica of Saint Peter in Rome from Piranesi’s ‘Vedute di Roma’ (1748?-1778?) Piranesi's etchings, executed from the 1740s onward, are technically masterful evocations of ancient buildings that are simultaneously scholarly inquiries and fanciful essays in space, light, and scale. Piranesi then began to etch views of Roman architecture that reflected his deeply felt emotional response to the surviving remnants of ancient grandeur. He was taught (1740-44) etching, the art form for which he remains best known, by Giuseppe Vasi. During a visit (1740) to Rome, which was then emerging as the center of European Neoclassicism, Piranesi began his lifelong obsession with the city's architecture. There's a downloadable edition from the University of Heidelberg in Germany. Piranesi used his knowledge of ancient engineering accomplishments to defend the creative genius of the Romans, but devoted even more space to a celebration of the richness and variety of Roman ornament. Piranesi advanced the view, shared by other scholars, that the Romans had learned not from the Greeks-as British and French scholars had begun to argue-but from the earlier inhabitants of Italy, the Etruscans. This is why many of the plates in this volume contain visual and textual references to Le Roy. In Della Magnificenza, Piranesi argues in favor of Roman architectural ornament by drawing comparisons with specific examples from Le Roy's text. Piranesi had completed Le Antichità Romane in 1756-1757 and when Julien-David Le Roy published Les ruines des plus beaux monuments de la Grece ( Ruins of the Most Beautiful Monuments of Greece) in 1758, Piranesi responded with Della Magnificenza. ![]() In the 1750s, intellectual circles were increasingly in favor of Greece.
